In May our kids learned about the Earth’s biomes and ecosystems. We explored the plants, animals, and different characteristics that make each biome unique. The importance of recycling and preserving the Earth’s biomes was also talked about and explored as we created art and clothes using recycled household items.
Using items that are usually thrown away or recycled for crafts and art projects with your child not only helps the planet, but also jumpstarts their own creativity. Don’t let the learning and reuse of materials stop! We have compiled some great ideas for recycled arts and crafts on our Pinterest page, and have highlighted some of them here to get you started now!
Make a game out of plastic bottles!
With an empty bottle, some household items, and a bit of creativity your child can have a game that is great for indoor and outdoor play! This idea from Krokotak is great too because it helps your child develop their hand-eye coordination while playing. Click here for step-by-step instructions.
Do-it-yourself dress up items!
What kid doesn’t love dressing up and pretending to be someone else?!? Create a jetpack like this one from DoodleCraft with just a couple of bottles, spray paint, and other common household items and you can send your kid rocketing to the far-off regions of their imagination! Inexpensive Bottle Cap Stamps!
Create fun and new re-usable stamps with bottle caps and foam stickers! This idea comes from Vanessa’s Values and is a great inexpensive idea that will help cure any child’s boredom. Use letters, shapes and/or number stickers for added learning! Click here for the full blog.
Recycle old t-shirts into bags!
Before you take that bag of your old clothes to Goodwill, check out this idea from Mommypotamus! With a few simple cuts and knots you can turn one of your old t-shirts into a reusable bag that is perfect for park days, library trips, quick grocery trips and more. The best part is that they are machine washable too. Click here to learn how easy this is!
These are just a few ideas to spark your creativity! Try to get in the habit of looking at regularly discarded things like bottles, cans, egg cartons, boxes, etc. as things that your child may be able to reuse for craft projects. You’ll spend less money at the store and they’ll love having different things to create with!
